John Craig McEachnie

John Craig McEachnie served as a Legislative Page in April 2000 when he was in Grade 8. John Craig talks about his experience as a Page:

Pages have to study math and learn a lot about how government works. Plus, when you go back to school, you still have to pass all the tests and keep your grades up.

"It wasn't easy, but I liked everything about being a Page.

"In the morning, we had to be at the legislature by 8:30 and most of the time, we were there until about 5:30. In the afternoon, when MPPs were in the house, we had to deliver messages for them and bring them water. They aren't allowed to bring anything to eat or drink into the chamber, so they drink a lot of water. At about 3:30 the speeches begin, and sometimes they go on for a really long time. On those days, you hope you're one of the "lucky" Pages who gets to go study math for an hour.

"My favourite thing about being a Page was getting to meet people from all over the province. There was a boy from Orillia who served as a Page with me, and he stayed at my house. I made some good friends when I was a Page, and we all still keep in touch."

On his last day as a Page, John Craig got to sit in the Speaker's chair. There's a weird tapping sound that comes from the pipes behind the chair … and no one has ever been able to find out why!

John Craig is active in his student council and plays all kinds of sports including baseball, volleyball, football and others. On top of all this, John Craig finds time to study piano and keep his grades high. John Craig hopes to be a lawyer someday, and plans to retire when he's 40.
